Tamarindo is one of the easier places in Costa Rica to take a first surf lesson: long beginner-friendly waves, sand-bottom stretches, and surf schools on every block. That also means noise—generic packages, shore photos, and little clarity about what actually happens in lesson one.
This guide is for first-timers: what to expect, what to bring, group vs private, and what a lesson with us looks like. No ocean fearmongering, and no “surf camp” pitch you didn’t ask for.

Is Tamarindo good for a first lesson?
Yes for most beginners. There are learning beaches with a sand bottom and areas that can be waist-deep when conditions cooperate. That isn’t a promise of perfect waves every day—tide, wind, and swell shift. A good school books around the ocean, not against it.
If you’ve never surfed, day-one goals aren’t “mastery.” They’re: basic water sense, feeling the board, practicing the pop-up, and catching whitewater or a small wave with help. Most of our first-timers stand up in lesson one—not always on the first wave, and that’s fine.
What a solid first lesson should include
Look for this, with us or anyone else:
- Stable board + rash guard included, in multiple sizes
- Certified instructor (ours: ISA-minded, zero-pressure) and a small ratio
- Beginner-appropriate beach (sand, not rocks) when the ocean allows
- Sand briefing before you enter the water
- Real time in the water (ours: about two hours per lesson)
What usually is not in the base price: premium photo/drone packages, transfers from another town, or a vague “hostel + lessons” bundle with no breakdown. If you’re quoted a combo, ask them to separate bed and lesson.
Group vs private
Group — Best with friends, or if you’re fine sharing an instructor. At The Backside: max 4 people per instructor. Pricing is per group (more people → lower cost each). Current web estimates (confirm when booking; they can change):

Private — One instructor, just for you. Worth it if you’re nervous in the water, want faster progress, or prefer not to learn in a group. Price: ask for availability (we don’t hard-code it here so the post doesn’t go stale).
What the first lesson looks like with us
- Meet at the hostel (Calle Cruz y Cardinal), about a five-minute walk from the beach.
- Briefing: safety, water priorities, pop-up on the sand.
- Walk down together with the boards.
- Practice in a beginner zone: whitewater pushes, timing, balance.
- Short feedback and what to try if you book again the next day.
Approach: zero pressure. Nobody pushes you into a wave you don’t want. If the ocean isn’t teachable that day, we reschedule or refund—you don’t lose money to the swell. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
What to bring (short list)
- Swimsuit / clothes you can get wet
- Sunscreen (reef-friendly if you can)

- Hair tied back if it’s long
- Towel and a dry change at the hostel or beach
You don’t need to bring a board or rash guard—those are included.
Common beginner mistakes (easy to skip)
- Comparing yourself to people who’ve surfed for years
- Booking without saying your real level (always say “never surfed”)
- Picking the cheapest class without checking instructor ratio
- Showing up dehydrated or without sunscreen

Traveling solo: women-only stay, open surf
